Christmas Isn't Over

Around Christmas time, we all become a little more giving, and a little more willing to purchase a little something for ourselves as well. (Understand that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ, the gift that God gave to all of us) Well, I believe the season of giving should last all year. We don't have to wait another 365 days to get that special someone a gift, or donate more goods to a local charity, or get those little gifts for yourself. If you work hard all year, you deserve it throughout the year. So I thought I'd share a few little goodies that I plan on treating myself to this year, and why....

1) JBL LSR2325 Monitors

I'd like these for my personal songwriting studio. I'm a little bit of a music equipment junkie, and I'm constantly reading about new microphones, studio monitors, etc. Things that make creating music that much more enjoyable.

2) Armitron Men's Swarovski Ion-Plated Dress Watch

I've owned only three watches is my life, and each one has either been lost or broken. But I'm getting tired of going in my pocket for my cell phone just to check the time. I think it's time for another watch.

3. MyTouch 4G Black

I've had the MyTouch 3G for about a year and a half, but the original was sent back to TMobile because my speaker stopped working. TMobile replaced it with a re-conditioned MyTouch (read: Refurbished), and I've been waiting to see what next phone I was going to buy. Don't get me wrong, the MyTouch is a great phone, but the one they sent me is too slow. I need lightening fast speed from my phone as I go throughout the day, and I think the MyTouch 4G is the answer for me.

4) AKG Quincy Jones Q701 Premium Class Reference Headphones

Okay, I've heard BeatsbyDre were some dope headphones, but who wouldn't want headphones from the Greatest Music Producer of All Time, Quincy Jones. This man is a legend with over 25 Grammy Awards. I will be making this purchase...definitely.

AND LASTLY....

5) XBOX 360 w/Kinect

My original XBOX 360 has stop has stopped playing my games and DVDs. I'll take it up to the local electronics store to see if they can fix it, but if they have to send it out, I'll just end up getting a new one. Especially after spending 45 minutes playing with Kinect in BestBuy a few weeks ago. I got a workout on that thing.

So do yourself a favor a make your own list of a few things you plan to get throughout the year. You deserve it.

Ne-Yo, Music Video Update, and 2011

So I am one of those people that still loves going to the store to pick up a CD. Yes, I do the ITunes, but I haven't used my Ipod in a long time. I'm always in the car now, and I just do CDs in the car. So I had the chance to pick up Ne-Yo's "Libra Scale" last Tuesday, and it reminded me of why I fell in love with music in the first place. Great stories! Infectious Beats! Overall...great songs that make you feel something. If you have not picked up Ne-yo's "Libra Scale", go get it.

What made me jump on it so fast was the "One in a Million" music video. Yes, I have been watching tons of videos because I am in the middle of shooting my first music video, and it's very inspirational. But I had to get the album after watching it. Not to mention that his album is somewhat of a Michael Jackson tribute. You can hear it in the vocals, and the direction of the music. And it's great!

So tonight, I'll be riding through the streets of Boston filming the last scene of my first music video, "What Could've Been", and albums and videos like Ne-yo is putting out reminds me of what everyone in the music business knows, but very few end up doing...STAY TRUE TO YOUR VISION AND YOUR ART. There will always be the people that do not like it, and the people that love it. The most successful businesses focus on the people that love their stuff, and they get those people to buy even more than they already do! :-)

So with all that in mind, 2011 is the year I release my brand those that love it, and want to hear it. We are getting the final mixes in for my album, and you will start to see all of the hard work over the last year or so brought to light! Gonna be interacting a lot more than I have been too.

See you in a few...

First Two Days of Music Video Shoot

The hour and a half trips to the Manchester, New Hampshire location...the last minute time changes of different scenes...the exhaustion of dancing for two hours straight...the bitter-cold of New England...ALL WORTH IT!!!!

Over the weekend, I teamed with Brickyard Media Group (www.brickyardrecords.com), to begin work on my first music video for my song "What Could've Been", and I'm having the best time working with them, as well as actress/model Jennifer Lowe, and actor/model Rocky DuBois, of Mystique Models. My music producer, Ezemdi Chikwendu has been at all the shoots taking behind the scenes video, and is poised to make his cameo appearance on the last day of shooting.

This is the first of many videos to come! Thank you to everyone who is involved. We are now a family!!

Music Video Shoot October 30-31

It's amazing that this past June, shooting a music video was the furthest thing from my mind. I wanted to write songs, record the album, get it out, and begin performing like crazy. After conversations with close friend, and music producer, Ezemdi, I realized the importance of getting a visual representation of my music, myself, and overall...my brand. The Jared Jones brand. Whether I'm writing for another artist, or performing my own songs, it all reflects my brand. Just like Pepsi has commercials, I should have something that visually represents me, and can propel my music career to unseen heights.

We are all going to YouTube even just to listen to songs, and viral videos spread faster than wildfire. So I put in the time, and connected with a great video production team (www.brickyardrecords.com). They wrote a great concept for my first video for the song "What Could've Been", and set the shooting dates for the last weekend of this month, October 30-31. I'm very excited to be working with them, and the shoot will be a lot of fun.

I'm a creator first, more than a songwriter, more than an artist, and more than a business person...I am a creator first. And seeing the vision come to life is something I've never experienced. Can't wait to see how people like it.

Kisses, Rollerskates, and Your Favorite Songs

Do you remember the Walkman? Seems like only yesterday that I was hitting that rewind button over and over to replay my favorite song, "Baby Be Mine", from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" cassette tape. That song inspired my dream at the time, to ask my fourth grade crush to be my girlfriend. I had it all prepared, the white teddy bear with a "Be Mine" heart, and a box of Hershey's Kiss Chocolates. With Valentine's Day being my birthday, how could she refuse? I would never find out. Naturally shy even to this day, I only had the courage enough to quickly jump out of my mother's van on the way home, and hand Rochelle the teddy bear. Coward!

But I continued to play the song. It reminded me of everything I had planned. So for me, songs inspire dreams. They help you to make a move (though I didn't go through with mine back then). It also sparks the memory. Think of your favorite song, and I'm curious why it became your favorite song. What was the moment? What were you doing?

That is where my initial passion for songs started; when I realized how powerful they could be. But being shy more than anything is why I had to start writing songs. When I was 13, my church youth group went on a field trip to a roller-skating rink in Southern Massachusetts, Skatetown USA. While waiting in line at the snack bar, I noticed this gorgeous looking girl with a curly-haired ponytail, and a red shirt. I could not take my eyes off of her. I played it off like my friend was the one who wanted to know her name, and the girl's friend told me. Naudia. You can guess what happened...I didn't do anything. Didn't ask her to skate with me. Didn't ask if I could buy her some ice cream. But I did write about it when I got home.

Writing became my outlet. Instead of kicking myself and enduring sleepless nights because of what I didn't do, I wrote about her. The only way I knew how to record at the time was to have two tapes rolling on my karaoke machine. When I recorded on one, I would move that one over to the play-only side, and have the new tape on the record side to record while the other was playing. Sounds confusing but it was very simple. So it began.

In songwriting, what's more satisfying than a five-paragraph e-mail from a fan of mine telling me how much one of my songs changed her life, or having someone tell me that something I wrote made them cry? And all off of songs inspired by personal situations, of what myself or others have been through. To be able to put my feelings and thoughts out there, and have that much of an effect on people...that's why I write.

September Plans

Wow, when did this month get here?! The year has been going by crazy fast. I have been doing tons of work behind the scenes getting ready for my own album, and beginning to put together my live show. I recorded a lot of songs for the album titled, "In Love With a Stranger" back in June, and spent much of the summer producing and co-writing with two other recording artists, Mateo Medina, and Kitarah. Now I'll be writing more for a new artist named Mikey, as well as focusing my efforts on my career. So many of you have been wanting music from me, and I have not had a great focus on my own career. Well September changes that. I will record two more songs for the album, and the songs are getting mixed as we speak.

Got a call the other day from a group who wants to book me at club Tantric in Providence, Rhode Island in mid-October, so time to prepare a hot show for that. And that's only the beginning, as I plan to book many more shows when the album is completed and ready to get over to you.

A lot to do, but I'm taking it all in stride. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I'll finally have my degree!!! That's what has been taking up a good amount of time too. I have been pursuing my degree online with Kaplan University, and this is my last week! I will have more time to focus on creating music, and the stories that will make you go..."hmmmmm". :-)

After I go change my HD DVR for the third time in two days, I will be in the studio getting tracks for my performance ready. See you when I see you!

Okay...well not my own...yet. But check out KutRoc Recording Artist, Mateo Medina's first music video, "It's Saturday".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15zn1UapCow

I co-wrote and co-produced the song with Mateo, Luis Medina, and Joey P.

First of many. Let me know what you think about the song, and the video. And let me know if you want to be in the next one!! This was shot in Boston.

(Don't look for me though, I was moving on the day of the video shoot).

The Allure/Support of American Idol vs. Supporting Independent Artists

I understand. There's something about the curiousity of stardom. A show where a few (not many) talented singers compete for the prize of a recording contract, by singing popular songs, and being judged by first, leaders in the music and entertainment industry, and then by...YOU. You get to decide who gets this "massive" record deal that creates ultimate stardom for one lucky/talented individual. Then, you get sold all of the company products from The American Idol karaoke video game (which is fun), to the American Idol tour, featuring the top ten singers from the show.

My question is...do you have that same type of attraction to artists who are not on American Idol? I urge you (once you finish reading this great blog), to go to the Wikipedia page, and find out what has happened with all the people who did not win American Idol. Will you begin supporting them again as you did when they were on the show? Even better, will you find artists to support without having to see them on American Idol?

You have the opportunity to be a fan of someone's music, today, and to help that artist have a successful career by supporting his/her music in attending shows, inviting friends, buying t-shirts and downloads, and even inviting them to do a house concert at your place. However, most enjoy spending more time in front of the television to be "sold" the illusion of stardom. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching stars, many of them are great, and I am entertained. But all of the American Idol winners were local and regional artists before making it onto the show. So you have an opportunity to find your "American Idol" by going to local shows, and finding the independent artists around you. Talk to people about the music scene in your area.

New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta are music markets that are flooded with great talent. Miami, Boston, and Chicago are the next music markets in line to offer a vast amount of talent. But where ever you live, I urge you to seek out FOUR or FIVE artists who you enjoy listening to, and support their careers. Instead of texting or phoning in to vote for them to win a contest, you can buy a MP3 download of theirs, or even send them an e-mail asking for free music. I bet you they will send you some.

As a fan of music, I am tired of being "force-fed" artists who go through a machine. And forgive me, because I am digressing a tad bit to show that I'm not hating on American Idol, but I'm using it as an example to show how the music/entertainment industry is manipulating music consumers to buy certain products. The music industry should be more than getting a "consumer" to buy a "product". It should be about a connection between the music, the artist, and the fan.

I love Carrie Underwood, she is one of my favorite artists, and she came through American Idol. She seems like a genuine person, and God Bless her, and the other winners and non-winners who have had great success. But I believe Carrie Underwood was great before she was on American Idol. She didn't need that to become a star...but the music industry wants you to believe that she did.

I'm wondering if as music fans, we are glorifying money and fame too much. I think we are letting money and fame dictate our tastes. It takes a lot of money to produce American Idol, but since they get it right back through all the advertisers who want to sell us something, they will keep "buying us". Now with the talk of new judges, they are continuing to create the "allure". And I like all of the potentials I've heard about...Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Aerosmith...and I can't blame them for taking whatever money is offered and running with it. But it's all to create an illusion that "American Idol" is the show through which stars are created, and the major label deal is how you become a star. For me, it starts with great music, and a great voice. And I personally don't need a show to help me find that. Yes, it's entertaining, but in a way, I wish they highlighted the people that didn't make it, so they can show that there is a music scene outside of the major record deals, and major videos and tours. Unless you have a lot of money behind you...it's a dream.

And that's the major difference between most major artists and not so major artists...money! Someone or some company puts money behind an act to polish, promote, and sell, and people buy. As fans, we are not giving enough credit to the artists who don't have that major backing.

Take the radio for instance. The music that gets onto the radio is music that major record labels pay millions of dollars to promote to all radio stations to constantly spin their music. Money. And you wonder why you hear the same songs over and over again?

Some may wonder, if an artist wants to be successful, they should get on a major label so that label can put tons of money behind them, and then maybe I'll start to pay attention. But there is a reason why Justin Timberlake, Usher, and Mary J Blige have started their own labels. In a nutshell, a major record deal dictates what the artist will sing, how they will sing it, and how much money the label will spend on it. Many artists are leaving major record deals now, because they want to have more control over their projects.

All I'm saying is that our music and entertainment industries would be much better if we supported all types of artists, and not just those signed to major record deals, or that come through reality shows. Yes, I understand with the internet, anyone can make a song and put it up, and that means more weeding out of the bad music, to get to the good music...but isn't that what the judges do at American Idol?? Take control of your music industry!! Go to YouTube and find the next Bieber before someone else does, and share it. Go to a concert of an artist you haven't heard before, because you may hear the next Alicia Keys.

I'm leaning towards starting a movement that makes finding great independent music the "it" thing to do. It's challenging...but it would be fun I think.

Anyone who wants to help me work on that let me know. I think it can happen.

June 1st, 30 Days to Finish My Album

June 1st is here! I'm excited because I have 30 days to record my album. I already have many of the songs written, but now I get to the recording and mixing of the songs. I've reached out to people on Facebook who want to be a part of the album, so a few will get invited to some of the recording sessions. It's gonna be fun. I get to put out the best material that represents me at this point in my life as a songwriter, and artist. But who cares right?! Oh yeah, you reading this do! This is a great beginning. You won't hear me on huge radio stations, or see me on the major TV shows...(well, if they want me I'll go), but too many artists are desperate for attention. Me...I just want to produce this album, and perform for the people who want to hear it.

Album Design, Album Recording, and College

Good stuff today...confirmed who will be designing my CD cover/booklet. It's exciting to finally be moving towards the finished album. Still a lot of recording to do, but we're getting there. I'm going to be writing new songs all day this Monday, and will be recording them later in the week. And college....(sigh)...I have two classes left and then I'm finished with my Associate's Degree...finally. I've been in and out of college for the past five years...just never had he motivation to finish. But being so close now...I need to finish. Wish me luck...say a prayer. In Good Company

This morning, I've been on the phone networking a little bit, and then taking care of business with my producer, and manager, and then I had a chance to send some stuff out to contacts of mine. All within a few hours, so I'm already feeling productive. Working on song for Charity at CrazzeHouse Studios

Over the weekend I get a call from CrazzeHouse Records label owner, Mark, who's a good friend of mine, and he's working on a song for charity. I had sometime today so I make the drive up, and help write the rest of the song. I laid down reference vocals because he plans on having about 10 different singers on the final recording. The big recording is scheduled for next week, and I'm looking forward to it. Everyone knows I spend so much time writing and taking care of business, that I don't record as much as I should (though that's changing soon). So it's good to get invited to record. It's always fun.

Updates Galore: Feeling very productive

Tons of updates to give you, and I'll try to put them in bullet form.

- The independent label I've been writing and producing for, for the last 10 months, is about to release their first artists' EPs (also known as short-playing album, 4-6 songs). When they are released, I will have a whole blog devoted to the label, and will tell you the name as well (I just won't know because I don't want their web-site flooded until everything is ready). But I can say it has been the most fun and rewarding experience thus far in my music career; to work with and help develop the two young artists that are signed to the label. So more on that soon...

- I was talking with producer, Ezemdi last night, and I also sent out an e-mail to my two other main producers I work with, David Saint, and Moso (Darell Scott), about getting more of our records to artists that we have a hand in developing. We will still submit records to major artists, but it feels like we have been neglecting the artists who are all around us, and who are more accessible to us. So that changed yesterday, and we will have a hand in developing many more artists very soon.

- An artist that we are developing will be going to New York in a week or two to audition for Atlantic Records.

- I just scheduled a meeting Friday morning to begin work with Recording Artist, and good friend, Ray Greene.

- I'll be redesigning the www.speakezmusic.com website within the next few weeks.

That's the bulk of it for now. Speak-EZ

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month

As a songwriter, I have a duty to create meaningful songs. Sure I write a hot club track every now and again, but to me, those come a dime a dozen. I ask myself a question before writing each song..."Will this song matter to people and why?" The song I have out currently playing on Jango Radio (www.jango.com), as well as a free download from ReverbNation is "Don't Leave Me Later (Leave Me Now)" (www.reverbnation.com/jaredjones), I wanted to do something different than what male artists normally do. With that song, I wanted it to speak to males and females alike, who have been in relationships going so well, and they only came to an end. Kind of a bittersweet vibe to it.

I went to a much deeper place with "You're Not A Fool". When the Rihanna-Chris Brown domestic violence case hit the news, I was shocked at what some comments were online....some were saying "She must have deserved it." Are you kidding? So while in the shower, the concept came to me, the melody start singing in my head, and I called my producer the same day to produce the track.

"You're Not A Fool" is more than a song, it's a call to action. I want God to let the song have a huge impact on males and females, who have either been a victim of domestic violence, or know someone who is a victim of domestic violence. There are many groups to seek help with, and "You're Not a Fool" is the calling card. Get help now, and do not wait.

I am in the process of partnering with many organizations so they can offer the download free from their web-sites. You can also download the song for free now at www.reverbnation.com/jaredjones.

I will not let this song fade until the message is heard, over, and over, and over, because it's so important. Lyrics and story behind the song are available on an earlier blog post...

We need to stop acting like this does not happen, and fix the issue. It's starts with each of us...I'm doing my part...will you do yours?

Jan 19, 2010, so I'm....

Finishing the recording of a new demo today, and will start recording another. Many people need records, and I gotta get these out.

About the Folgers, I hit my manager up about it, and also sent e-mails to the marketing department at the Smucker company (they own Folgers). Haven't heard back yet, but will keep at it. We believe the jingle will give Folgers a fresh , young sounding jingle that will cater more to the college the market (let's face it..the ones that could really use the coffee after long nights out, and needing to get up for 8am classes).

Later this week, I'll also be writing and recording a new song to release online myself.

Stay up...

Friday, Jan 15, 2010 - Folgers and New Records

On the schedule for today...I'm getting in contact with Folgers about a jingle Ezemdi and I wrote for them.

I have two new records I'll finish recording and mixing for David Saint (which we will be shopping right away), and I have a track from J. Hart (via Danny Reynolds) that I'll finish and send to him today.

Also yesterday, a major label sent me their artists who are looking for records, and it's time to get busy submitting records to them as well.

I'll update as I finished.

New Year - Full Steam Ahead

I reflected on last year, and realized everything I have done to this point has prepared me to make things happen in my music career, and for the music industry as a whole. I believe God gave me the gift to write songs because I have something to offer the music industry, and fans of music across the world. The biggest challenges in music I have faced are, getting the right music to the right artist in time for their album. Looking back, I was not utilizing all of my resources. I'll admit, I became a little complacent after a few big TV placements. But that should have made me work harder.

Yeah, I made an excuse or two, about not being able to get stuff done, but those days are over. I am keeping myself inspired to create, and make the business connections I need to get the album and television placements. It's not easy, but tons of songwriters have done it, what's the difference with me? It's how hard I'm willing to work, and how much time I'm willing to put into it until it works. I'm taking more ownership of my career, instead of "waiting" for things to happen.

When I mentioned keeping myself continually inspired, I read a blog by music industry veteran, Eric Beall. (http://ericbeall.berkleemusicblogs.com/).

My face is always in Billboard magazine reading about what's going on in other careers, and how I may be able to align myself with that.

But first and foremost, I'm putting the love back into making music. For a while, it became more business like...almost like work! (ugh!!) But that's because I was focused on the wrong things.

With all that said, and I'll qoute my good friend Danny Reynolds from our conversation yesterday, "No one can stop you, but you." (I know others have said it, but I qoute who I want :-)

With a brand new CV-12 microphone (http://www.avantelectronics.com/index.htm) gracing my vocal booth...I'm ready to work!

Here we go!!
